Homemaking tips? That’s not for me, you might be thinking. I’m no modern homemaker.
I’m single, not married, live in an apartment, career-oriented, etc…or whatever else reason you think you can’t be a modern homemaker.
But modern homemaking is not just for stay-at-home moms, with no “job” who love to wear aprons. (But that does kind of describe me now that I think about it…)
A modern homemaker can be single or married, a homebody, love to travel, a mom, an entrepreneur, and anything in between.
That’s because modern homemaking is about creating spaces for life to happen.
- It’s about learning to cook (or using Uber Eats…) so you can invite friends over to share a meal.
- Modern homemaking is about cleaning the kitchen so your kids can make a joyful mess later with finger paints.
- It’s about creating a sanctuary to return to after a long day of work.
Homemaking doesn’t have to be old-fashioned.

4 Homemaking Tips for the Modern Girl
1.) Create a cleaning routine.
I’m going to get the one everyone hates out of the way first. Contrary to popular belief, creating a cleaning routine schedule is a lot easier than you think.
You see, having a routine saves us time from thinking about what we need to get done. Our “daily tasks” become quick habits and you’ll find your house stays cleaner longer.
I know I used to think I couldn’t have people over unless my house was spotless. First off – that’s a lie! Have your family and friends over anyway. And check out this post on Scruffy Hospitality if you need more encouragement!
But second, your home or apartment will stay neater so all you have to do is pick up a few items from the floor, brush a few crumbs off the counter – and you’re ready for company! Check out this post on how to speed clean last-minute guests.

2.) Automate Your Daily Tasks
There are two main ways to automate our household tasks. Think about it like putting your daily tasks on autopilot.
The first is done by simplifying our daily tasks ourselves.
This includes routines, meal planning, and even decluttering our home so there is less to pick up and take care of.
Here are a few posts to help you get started with that:
- cleaning routine schedule
- Morning routine
- Night routine
- Decluttering Tips
- Laundry Hacks for when you’re busy
I don’t have a post on meal planning because, if I’m being honest, I’m terrible at it! Send help! Seriously, send me your best tips. It’s one of my goals to work on this year.
The second way to automate household tasks is to bring it into the 21st century.
The gig economy (or in other words the use of apps such as Uber, Instacart, and dog walking services) and the latest gadgets can greatly help with our daily tasks but they definitely come with a price.
Make sure you can afford it first – it’s not worth going into debt so you can have a robot clean your floors. But if you can afford it, or save up for it, technology is a great help to modern homemakers.
These are a few of my favorites.
a.) Get a Roomba
If you don’t have one already, you should get a Roomba. I just press a little button (after I clean up the high chair, put away a million times, and move the chairs #momlife) but then it happily cleans my whole downstairs while I wash dishes, throw in a load of laundry, or even take a breather for a minute. Because resting is a homemaking hack toat keeps us sane!
b.) Instacart
I got Instacart as a birthday gift a month after I had my baby and it’s been a godsend. I’ll be honest, I missed the email telling me to cancel so I unknowingly signed up for another year but I’m not mad about it. The $100 a year it costs is worth it to me to not have to drag my toddler to the grocery store and fight long lines. Plus, they bring large bags of cat litter, cat food, and waters right to my door.

c.) Use your crockpot at least once a week
They’re such a great invention! I love throwing ground beef, taco seasoning, and salsa in one and letting it cook while I work on other things.
Here are a few of my other favorite crockpot recipes:
3.) Create a space family and friends feel comfortable and loved.
Modern homemakers turn a basement apartment into a home.
They see blank walls and decorate them to create beautiful spaces.
They fill their homes with the smell of freshly baked cookies for guests. (I never bake so you should probably feel bad for my husband because our house never smells like freshly baked cookies. I should probably start!) Or they fill their home with other good smells! Here’s how I make my home smell good all the time.
They offer drinks to guests who have been traveling.
A modern homemaker offers a warm environment for people to feel safe in and laugh.
They create spaces for their kids to use their imagination and play.
I want to be clear here. Modern homemakers may have homes that look like they are out of a Martha Stewart magazine, but it’s not the pieces that matter. It’s how comfortable people feel in your home that makes friends want to come back.
Also, create a space that your family can find rest and rejuvenation. And if you don’t love your home right now, here are 5 tips to love your home (again.)
4.) Make a Mess
Creating spaces for life to happen also means creating spaces for life to get messy. I love this quote from the book “Homebody” written by Joanna Gaines:
“For the first time, I saw how interesting it was for them when I simply carved out a space that could stretch their young imaginations. I realized that as parents we can either lose our minds to our kids’ messes and the endless cleanups or we can choose another perspective. It was important to me that I create a home that invites my kids to be a central part of it and that communicates not only to our family but also to any guests who enter that this home is for all of us.”
Create a space that you and your family can get a little messy. Create fun little DIYs. Make messes with finger paints. Get flour everywhere because you’re trying a new recipe.
It’s those kinds of messy memories (and homemaking tips) that can really make a house feel like a home.
If that’s not enough, think about it this way. We all have to eat and sleep somewhere, right? Well, why not love where you have to do those things. Better yet, why not create a place where others feel loved as well.
What are some of your favorite homemaking tips?

Such great tips! Without a cleaning schedule my house would be a pit! 🙂 We received a Roomba for a Christmas gift a couple of years ago and WOW, what a game changer. It’s amazing how this little machine can make your life easier.

I am a stay at home mom so these tips are so cute for being a modern homemaker. I also want a Roomba so bad! Lol. But I think I need to wait till the kids are a little older so they don’t try and play with it…
Haha fair point!
Thanks for the great tips! Even as an older person, I can get stuck in a rut and need to get back on track every now and then! These tips are a great place to start!
