Happy Monday! Despite all the photos of pumpkin spice lattes on my Instagram feed, “FALL” doesn’t officially start until this Friday. Seems crazy, right? Thankfully, fall weather has already started to hit here in D.C., a welcome change since the summers are so hot. With slightly cooler temperatures its also a great time to start wearing kimonos, which is why I’m excited to share with you three kimono outfit ideas for fall.
Personally, I like the kimono because it’s an easy clothing item to incorporate into your wardrobe, unlike other items such as rompers. I know, I know people LOVE their rompers but for some reason, I just haven’t taken the plunge yet. Maybe it’s because I have a small bladder and a romper just seems impractical for me. (I have to take off my whole outfit every time I have to pee?) I don’t know. Either way, I can’t do the romper YET, but I sure can do a kimono.
Kimonos can take a boring outfit and give it some pizzazz, they can provide an extra layer for warmth, and they are SO easy to throw on. That’s probably my favorite part. Also, they are light enough that they make the transition from summer to fall effortlessly.
3 Kimono Outfit Ideas for Fall
1. Over a Dress
I love getting the most use out of my outfits and wearing dresses into fall is just another way to do that. Instead of sandals, we can wear booties; and instead of leaving the house in short sleeves, it’s a great time to throw a kimono over your summer dresses in case of cooler weather.

Don’t be afraid to mix patterns with your kimonos and dresses, either. Personally, I love florals and stripes together. Always have, always will.
2. Over a Romper.
Yes, I already talked about not bringing myself to wear a romper. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like the look. I actually think they are super cute, and can transition well into fall with a long sweater -or – even a kimono. This outfit is for your warm fall days that aren’t as hot as summer ones.
We’re talking visits to the pumpkin patch, a trip to Target to check out Joanna Gaines’ new collection, or even a bridal/baby shower. Plus, it’s such an easy outfit to put together. So it’s okay. I’m giving you permission to wear a romper, as long as you throw a cute kimono over top.

3. With Leggings or Skinny Jeans
Lastly, let’s talk about an outfit idea for those warm, but not summer-warm days and nights.
Leggings and big shirts will be my favorite outfits to wear forever. FOREVER. So comfy, makes my legs look like toothpicks (For some reason I like this?) and just so easy to put together. If I could wear leggings every day I would. No shame in the legging game. I don’t even care if people don’t think they’re pants. With a long enough shirt, no one knows and I can be comfortable all day. The only place I might use caution is wearing to work. But that’s what casual Fridays are for, right?
This outfit will be for your slightly chillier but still nice fall days/nights. You could wear over a black dress to dinner, over jeans and a T-shirt to run to the grocery store or even leggings and UGGS for a haunted hayride.
Side note – can we talk about UGGS for a second? I’m so sick of them being listed as “basic.” Where I grew up in Buffalo EVERYONE had uggs. Not because it was a fashion statement, but a necessity in the winters. Nothing keeps your feet as warm as Uggs. Nothing! So long live the Ugg-wearers. ;)
Anyway, skinny jeans or leggings and a kimono will be a staple outfit for you this fall.
And don’t worry, even though these are kimono outfit ideas for fall when spring/summer returns you can keep wearing your kimono. It works great over a tank top and shorts, or even a bathing suit cover. It’s really an awesome four-season top.
