Today we’re talking about a DIY Charcoal mask and if you know me, you know how much I love my DIY masks. First, they are natural, and second, they are inexpensive to make.
Many of you have already tried the turmeric one and even sent me pictures of your beautiful orange faces. But today I’m sharing another favorite mask that won’t temporarily stain your skin orange but will give your pores a deep clean.

DIY Charcoal Mask Recipe
Friendly PSA: please don’t use charcoal from your grill. Instead, you buy activated charcoal from your grocery store or even Amazon. These two charcoals are chemically very different, one is good for you and the other is not.
Activated Charcoal has been the hot new thing in beauty the last few years because how well it works, and for its many uses including to whiten teeth, deep clean your hair, and even help with food poisoning. (It’s true –hospitals keep it around for this very reason!)
But today we’re using it as a mask because activated charcoal works like a magnet in binding to dirt deep in your skin and pulling it out. That’s why it makes such an awesome cleanser, scrub and mask. When dirt and oil get into our pores it makes them larger, so it just makes sense that if you get that gunk out, it will minimize them. Activated charcoal also pulls out excess oils, removes dead skin and can reduce scars.
Now let’s talk about the other ingredient in this mask: Aloe vera.
ALOE VERA
Feel free to use the real stuff from the grocery store but I buy organic juice from Amazon to make my masks.
Of course, we all know aloe as the magic ingredient that can help with sunburns but it also makes a great moisturizer, as well as treats acne and reduces wrinkles. That’s thanks to two components in it, Auxin and Gibberellins that reduce skin inflammation and promote the growth of new cells.
So when you mix these two bad boys together it makes for one powerful mask…and a pretty simple one too.
DIY Charcoal Mask to Deep Clean Your Pores
- 1 charcoal capsule
- 1 teaspoon aloe vera juice
Directions:
- Mix the two ingredients together. Feel free to add more aloe vera if you’d like a more liquid consistency or even another charcoal capsule. It is not an exact science.
- Simply paint it on with a clean makeup brush, or something similar.
- Wash off with water after it completely dries on your skin.
- Follow with a good natural moisturizer.
WARNING! WARNING!
Remember how I said this will deep clean your pores? Well, be prepared for it to go in so deep and show you every pore on your face as you run from the mirror screaming. Yes, you will literally see every pore on your face about time this mask dries…but take heart because then you know it’s working! It’s getting in there and like a magnet pulling the gunk out.
The next morning when you get up I think you will be surprised at the transformation in your skin. Every time I use this mask I am shocked – there’s a reason it’s so popular.
Just make sure to follow with a good natural moisturizer like this DIY Face lotion for sensitive skin OR Washed Ghee for Beautiful Skin. If you try this mask PLEASE send me a photo on Instagram. I love to see when people are making awesome choices for their skin and having fun, too.

Haha I’m glad you mentioned not to use the charcoal from the grill. I had no idea you could make a facemask using activated charcoal. That’s really cool. Living in China, we have a bunch of these since we never know when we might get sick from street food, but this is a cool alternative use. Thanks for sharing 🙂 Can’t wait to try.
Ooh sounds like your use was definitely more for necessity!

I can’t believe this DIY is only two ingredients! I definitely want to give it a try sometime.
I’d definitely like to give this a try. I knew aloe vera was good for sunburns but didn’t know about the cell growth!
I really would like to try this, but am also really scared to try it….At 33 I’m trying to find a new routine to use with my face.
Danielle – I promise there is no reason to be scared! It’s simply and easy to come off. (The only scary part is seeing your pores!) 🙂
Finally tried a charcoal face mask with my daughter and talk about loving the feel and results. I’m hooked.

What a great idea, I totally need to do this…
I normally have clear skin, but it’s been giving me a lot of trouble for the past couple of months. I need to try this out – thank you!
Thanks for writing this blog, I was some what well read with this topic. It’s always nice learning new things.
I have done this once before coming across your blog or this article….
The mess in the bathroom and numerous tries to wash the charcoal from my face. Do you have a trick how to wash it out, or you just keep washing and scrubbing till all of the blackness is gone?
To address the bathroom mess first: I usually put down an old towel over the sink!
And yes, I just keep washing until the blackness is gone. I don’t think I’ve had that much trouble getting it off yet but you could try an old washcloth to scrub with.
Really a great post. Activated charcoal has many benefits. I have tried some Activated Charcoal Drink Recipes. But not externally yet. I will apply this mask on the face today. I am sure it will work excellent externally, just like the drinks work internally. Thanks for sharing this recipe.
