Do you have trouble falling or staying asleep at night? Do you wish you had a magic potion that could calm stress? There is hope. I’m going to teach you how to make a DIY “Sweet Dreams” lotion to help you fall – and stay – asleep.
As someone who has made dozens of DIY health and beauty products I have my favorites. This recipe is one of them. It works even better than expected. I don’t normally have trouble sleeping (ask my husband who nudges me at 8:30pm to see if I’m still watching the TV, or if I’ve fallen asleep…again) but I do know what it’s like to feel stressed, anxious, and have trouble falling asleep when I am worried about something.
A Lotion that Relieves Stress Too
I made this recipe one day only because I had leftover Shea butter from DIY lotion bars that I wasn’t sure what to do with it. So I looked up how to make a lotion with it, and then added my own essential oils that I figured would relieve stress and help me fall asleep when I am up worrying.
The first night I tried it I felt like I had been drugged. I fell asleep instantly and was out the whole night. Fun Fact – I also grind my teeth when I sleep so occasionally I take a muscle relaxer to help unclench my jaw. I know this is a bold statement, but my DIY lotion was comparable to the drug. I thought it was a fluke so I tried the next night. Same result! Even though I don’t need it I like to rub a little on my feet every night to ensure a great night’s sleep.
For my batch I used Lavender essential oil, frankincense essential oil, and an oil called To Be a Peace from a company called Youngevity. However, you can interchange any of these oils with chamomile, clary sage, ylang ylang, or cedarwood – all of which promote relaxation.

DIY “Sweet Dreams” Lotion
What You Will Need for DIY Lotion:
- ¼ cup shea butter
- ¼ coconut oil
- 10 drops lavender essential oil
- 8 drops Frankincense
- 8 drops To Be at Peace
- glass jars
The essential oils I buy from Youngevity (actually, my mom bought them for me as gifts) and everything else from Amazon. Feel free to find them where you can though.
How To Make DIY Lotion To Fall Asleep Quick:
1.) Melt the coconut oil and shea butter on the stove. I’d recommend using an old tin can to melt the mixture. Sit it in a pan of water and turn the heat to medium.
2. ) When fully melted take off the heat for 10 minutes.
3.) Mix in essential oils.
4.) Put it in the fridge for 45 minutes.
5.) Whip ingredients together with an electric mixer.
6.) Whip it for a good 8-10 minutes if you want it a nice soft lotion consistency.
7. )Store in a small mason jar or other container with a lid.
How to Use DIY Face Lotion to Fall Asleep Quick:
Rub a small amount on the bottom of your feet at night. Feel free to use anywhere else though because although it gets absorbed better through your feet, it is an amazing lotion and can be used anywhere on the body.

Sarah,
I just found you at Motivational Mondays. Your “Fall Asleep Quick” post caught my eye because I just spent three days wide awake all night. [Thankfully, I sleep well last night]. I have Fibromyalgia, arthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, and a few other issues. My husband just has a terrible time sleeping.
Anyway, I just read AND PINNED several of your posts.
I’ve been writing about fibromyalgia and have been searching for someone to guest write about essential oils that might help those of us with pain, restlessness, and fatigue.
Is this something you might be willing to do for me? I try to post on Tuesdays and then link up with several Chronic pain pages throughout the week.
f you might be willing to write for me, please contact me by e-mail.
Super interesting, I have never tried! Thanks for sharing!
This is awesome! I have a terrible time falling asleep, and I also grind my teeth when I sleep. I have to sleep with a mouth guard, and I also usually take Melatonin. I can’t wait to try this!
I grind my teeth too and also use a mouthguard. While it’s not a replacement for that, it’s definitely a nice support system!
This is so cool! I have never tried something like this, but definitely am going to soon. Great post 🙂 xO, Nicole // http://www.empirestyles.com
Awesome! I’ve been wanting to try making my own lotions and other beauty products!
I’m a big fan of making my own…I can often tweak them to be better than store bought.
This is great!! I am always looking for natural ways to fall asleep!
Another trick (Although this lotion is truly awesome!) is to drink warm milk (perhaps a cocoa drink) with a vitamin C tablet. Works like a drug too.
This sounds amazing!!! I’m going to have to try it! <3
It’s AMAZING!
This looks amazing! I love anything all natural & using EOs. I can’t wait to try this. Thank you for the recipe!!
Ashley – it’s fantastic. I hope you try it!
I need to try this. It’s so hard to turn my brain off at night and I hate using any sleep medication. Thanks for the recipe!
Ashley – thanks for stopping by. I can’t say enough good things about this lotion. but another trick you may want to try is a vitamin C pill and warm milk. Also works like a drug!
I need this so badly right now! I have my diffuser going, but my mind is constantly racing with thoughts. I will definitely be mixing me up some in the next couple of days! Thank you for sharing!
Erin – great. I hope it works for you!
I definitely need to try this! Any help in the sleeping department is always much appreciated!
I love ideas like this.
I hope I do fall asleep with this quickly!
Sweet dreams!
Yep, I could use this for sure. I will have to see if I can get the ingredients where I live. I’d love for you to link up to Tips and Tricks Link party on Monday at 9 pm eastern time at Fearlessly Creative Mammas. Pinning this.

It works so good!
Your “fall asleep quick” headline caught my eye, Sarah. It takes me a good while to fall asleep most nights, unless I’m absolutely exhausted, so this post comes just in time! I’ll definitely have to give it a try. Thanks for sharing this with us on #shinebloghop this week!
this recipe sounds amazing! thanks for sharing this – I’ll have to try!
Love these homemade recipes, so much better than the junk most store products contain. Thanks for the great recipes! #weekendblogshare
This recipe sounds dreamy! Thank you for sharing with us on the Art of Home-Making Mondays at Strangers & Pilgrims on Earth! 🙂
Haha it IS dreamy! 🙂
Both my kids and I have anxiety and have trouble sleeping. Add in my Auto Immune disease and it makes it really hard to fall asleep. Once I get there I’m usually good, but it’s the getting there! I am so doing this. A big jar so that we can all use it. Man, I don’t even know what we’d all be like if we were able to get the sleep we need! You are a lifesaver! Thanks so much for sharing!
Nikki it’s great! As I wrote above this, a powdered vitamin C capsule with warm milk also works like a drug though to give an added boost!
I love how simple it is to make these DIY scrubs. Thanks for the recipe.
I love the sound of this- both the activity of making it and the possibility of more sleep! Sometimes I struggle terribly so is love to give this a go and thanks for the tip of putting it on your feet, I would have never have guessed that they’re the best place to put it. Thanks for joining the #weekendblogshare
Yup…same with Vicks if you have a cold! haha
Thanks so much for the recipe I will have to try it!! Please come on over and share this at our blog hop we have Wed-Sunday. We would love to have you! https://www.floydfamilyhomestead.com/
Just linked up – thank you!
I’m definitely going to try this. I have insomnia and falling asleep quickly would be heaven for me.
Please tell me if it works for you too!
I sure could use some of this lotion, I have insomnia and have a really hard time falling asleep. I take Melatonin some of the time, but don’t like to take it every night. Then sometimes it still takes and hour or more before I go to sleep. Thanks for sharing!
Welcome Linda. Yes, I loved that it was an all natural drug free (melatonin free too) way to fall asleep better. And it works!
Thanks so much for this Sarah. I normally don’t have a problem falling asleep but does and he grinds his teeth. I think this would be an amazing way to treat him <3
I grind my teeth too! Ugh. Although it won’t fix that completely, combined with a night guard or muscle relaxer it’s good good stuff!
This sounds amazing. Is it safe for toddlers?
Kathryn,
It should be! You could always make a batch and try a tiny bit on the bottom of their feet at a time.
