My husband and I got married in September after a 2 and-a-half month engagement. (Sounds crazy but it is possible to plan a wedding in that short amount of time – here’s how I did it!) I was so worried about finding a venue and caterer that I kept putting my own beauty needs on the back burner. While making sure your guests have food is critical, don’t forget about yourself in the chaos of wedding planner either. Like photographers and venues, makeup artists and hair stylists can book up a year or more out. I just happened to get lucky to land an amazing make-up artist from my area, Makeup by Tierney. And today, she will walk us through 5 natural makeup tips to look beautiful on your wedding day.

 5 Natural Makeup Tips For Your Wedding

1.) How long before my wedding should I focus on my skincare?

Hopefully you’re already on a skin care routine, but if not no need to worry.  The best thing you can do for yourself is forgo the drugstore and make an appointment with an Esthetician.  If you don’t have the funds for monthly facials many Estheticians can perform a skin analysis and make professional product recommendations that will yield far more impressive results than otc products.  An Esthetician knows that it’s important not to make any drastic changes to your skincare routine too close to the big day as it could provoke breakouts or even worse an allergic reaction. Doing an exfoliating enzyme at home or a professional peel two weeks before the big day will ensure that you have smooth, even and glowing skin.  Eating healthy, exercising and drinking plenty of water will also help you get that bridal glow.

2.) Is a trial make-up run necessary?

The majority of the time you will hear me say yes, with the exception of the out of town bride who may be unable to travel. In these cases Skype and email can be your best friend!  I like to think my trials or as I call them “Preview Sessions” are pretty special in what they achieve.

Prior to meeting I ask my clients to share photos so I can see what kind of look that they are going for.  During the Preview Session we go over the details of your wedding, dress, colors, style and feel.  This will help me not only execute your look but start to think about a look that will flatter your bridesmaids.

Every look and every bride is different, it’s all about tuning into what the bride is going for and not imposing the same look on every face.  I recently did a coral and gold sunset eye for a bride to match her wedding colors and a pop of “something blue” liner  with a bronze and gold eye on another.

During preview session brides are able to try lashes and airbrush at no extra cost. We are also able to go over booking policies and morning of time-lines. Often times I will make small tweaks after the trial and even purchase special products for my brides.  In a nutshell the A preview session will ensure that you look exactly how you’ve envisioned on your big day.

3.) What’s the difference between traditional makeup and air-brushed makeup? Which one is better?

While one is not superior to the other airbrush is a great choice for brides. Airbrush makeup is a fine mist that is applied through an air gun. It’s light weight, tear proof, transfer resistant, and photographs beautifully. Unlike traditional makeup airbrush goes on in little dots as opposed to one big block of  color; because of this it photographs exceptionally well.

When deciding  between the two It’s all about skin type and texture. Often times I will end up doing a combination of both airbrush and traditional makeup. If the bride has blemishes or uneven skin tone, I will conceal and correct with traditional foundation and then lock everything in place with a light mist of airbrush to create a flawless finish. I also LOVE applying blush via airbrush for that long lasting glow.

4. I don’t normally wear much makeup. Can I get all my makeup done and still look “natural?”

Absolutely,  I have many natural brides who are apprehensive about not looking like themselves. While they will need more makeup that usual to look like those drool worthy Pinterest photos it can be done with restraint. I find in these cases it’s all about tuning into the aspects that make it feel like too much to the bride and executing it in a balanced way.

5.) What’s the latest trends in skincare/make up that I should know about?

There are more beauty trends than ever with the popularity of social media. My advice would be to take them with  a grain of salt. Contouring for instance looks great on brides and photographs well but not all brides need it and in some cases it can be too harsh.  Highlighting is another popular technique, I love to make it look like my brides are glowing from within while avoiding the look of metallic stripes. Matte lips are all the rage and fortunately for brides they are very long lasting and will not kiss off on your groom! Timeless bridal makeup is really an art form in which I incorporate the trends with restraint. You never want to look back at your photos and look dated.

My favorite new skin care treatment is Microneedling.  It builds collagen, firms and can greatly improve the look of acne scars with virtually no down time. As always I recommend a consultation with a professional esthetician before trying anything new.
