You may think making your own DIY face wash is ridiculous. I sure did until I realized the ones I bought in the store were actually causing my breakouts because of all the chemicals. I switched to Dr. Bronner’s Castille soap and my skin cleared up. After using it for years I got greedy though and decided I wanted more than just clear skin – I wanted it to glow and be soft too. That’s when I decided to start making my own and – unless a brand in the future blows me away – I won’t be going back.

What You’ll Need to Make Your Own Face Wash
- ¼ cup Doctor Bronner’s Liquid Castile soap (I use tea tree but you could also make this DIY Rose & Almond Face Cleanser.)
- ½ cup distilled or purified water
- 2 tsp almond oil
- 2 tsp glycerine
- 2 tsp pure aloe vera
- Foaming pump bottle
- 5 drops essential oil of your choice (Lavender or Tea tree are probably your best choices.)
With the exception of the pump bottle, I bought all my ingredients from Amazon. I found the bottle at Bed, Bath & Beyond but you could always use an old foaming hand soap bottle, too.
1. Combine all the ingredients but soap in a blender or even a magic bullet.
2. If you’re going to use essential oils make sure you use enough that you can smell it over Dr. Bronner’s soap because it’s so strong. Essential oils also increase their shelf life too, though.
3. Add mixture to foam bottle and then castile soap to it. Gently stir or shake.
Seriously, this stuff is amazing. It cuts through my eye makeup like a knife and leaves my skin feeling so soft. You must try it and then let me know what you think.

Oh wow, yes. All the ingredients sound so refreshing and natural as a face wash. I have got to try this. Doctor Bronner’s soap isn’t sold in South Africa but we do have something similar made from rooibos tea so I’ll try adapt the recipe and see how it works. Thank you Sarah
I have been making my own face wash for a while now. Except I haven’t tried aloe vera in it yet, that’s a good idea. I add a small amount of Vitamin E oil, tea tree oil, and orange oil, and I love it!
Linda, that sounds amazing! I am going to have to try that combo too.
I’ve never attempted my own face wash but this sounds like a great combination of ingredients! Especially if it removes eye makeup!
I had no idea how easy it was to make this! Will definitely try this with some lavender!
This is so cool! I bet it saves you money in the long run. I need to try Dr. Bronner’s before experimenting with making my own face wash. I love when you share these DIYs!
A bit of an investment of front but in the long run absolutely!
Ive never tried this! Very interesting !
I’ve been wanting to make my own face wash! I’m really trying to get away from buying products that I can make myself in a much cleaner way!

I’ve been looking for a recipe to make my own face wash, and this looks perfect! Thanks for sharing
I am into making everything from scratch. So this will fit perfect into our home with all of our DIY stuff.
I’ve been slowly going through my home and replacing the store version filled with chemicals, with homemade versions that aren’t. I’ll have to add this to my list of things to make! Thank you so much for sharing this!
Melissa – I’ve been doing that too! I hope you love this recipe.
oooooo, i love making my own product and will have to give this a try…thanks for sharing!
Very welcome!
Wow! This sounds great, and I love that it removes eye makeup. Sometimes, eye makeup remover doesn’t even do that! I definitely want to give this a try. Thanks for sharing!
Very welcome. I hope you love it!
Yes, it is amazing how well it cuts through makeup.
Love this. I think I have all the ingredients already. Pinned to share!
Thanks for the share! And I hope you love the face wash 🙂
This sounds awesome! I was just thinking today that as I finish my face wash and moisturizer… all my skincare products…I should just try making my own.
Exactly. Worth a shot, right?
I had no idea I could do this. I have acne and its gotten really bad trying different stuff. I will give this a try thanks you so much!
I suffer from it is which is why I’m super careful about what I put on my skin.
Oh yay i’m going to try this i already have a few of the ingredients. I like all natural. Right now i just been using baking soda. its good at exfoliating but gentle.
Yes, I’ve heard good things about baking soda too as a gentle exfoliate.
Totally trying this next week! thanks Sarah!

Okay, I have all of the stuff for the except the pure aloe vera. Can you help me out on what I’m looking for? There’s aloe vera in the dietary supplements section at Whole Foods, is that it? (The only other form of aloe vera I could find today was the stuff you slather on after a sunburn and I was pretty sure that wasn’t it!). Save me from more confusion in the aisles of Whole Foods, lol!
haha Stephanie YES you want the aloe vera found in the dietary supplement section! Definitely not the sunburn stuff. I should clear that up!
